One of the hottest topics in the news today is the crisis of our national obesity. Especially, since it has just been recently announced that one in three Americans are overweight. The weight loss business is already a multi-billion dollar industry where Americans spend at least $50 billion a year on products that include pills, dietary supplements, diet programs and medical procedures. More than 70 million Americans will go on diets in 2010. The subject of how to lose weight is currently attracting focused national attention with First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign to curb childhood obesity.
With so many diets out there, many folks lose track of the fact that no matter which one they choose, it is guaranteed to work better with a little bit of personal preparation and mindset strategy beforehand. By following a few simple rules, based on common sense, the prospective dieter can dramatically improve the chances of accomplishing his or her weight loss objectives. The following guidelines are to be put into practice before you begin your new weight loss diet.
1. Eliminate all soft drinks, sodas, bottled juices, sweetened bottle teas and other pre-sweetened liquids.
If you are a major user of these drinks, you will undoubtedly see measurable weight loss by completely eliminating them from your diet. Drink lots of water instead. Brew your own teas and sweeten with a drop of honey or stevia. Avoid drinking anything that contains large amounts of sugar or high fructose corn syrup. This step alone will go along way toward restoring your body's natural insulin balance and prepare you for weight loss.
2. Avoid processed foods as much as possible.
Many condiments, salad dressings, breads, lunch meats cereals and other common foods contain additives that drastically alter your body's chemical balance and prevent weight loss. Learn to avoid them.
3. Get in the habit of starting your day with a good breakfast. Eat a good lunch and a light dinner.
Avoid sugary breakfast items such as donuts and sweet cakes. Instead, have oatmeal or an egg, fresh fruit and whole grain toast. Eat well at lunch and lightly up to 6 p.m. Anything after that should be fruit or yogurt.
4. Start serving yourself regularly on a smaller plate than usual.
You will be surprised how your weight loss focus will increase by applying this little psychological trick.
5. Take at least one brisk walk each day.
Walking daily will prepare your metabolism to enter fat burning mode.
6. Get into the routine practice of reading labels on everything you plan to consume.
You'll undoubtedly be jolted when you start reading labels and finding out what is in your favorite foods!
By applying these six simple disciplines, you will be sending a message to your body that says it is time to put things into balance and shed some pounds. Only when this has been accomplished, will you be ready to begin that weight loss diet program you've been reading about.
